Training Overview

Our training approach has been developed over many years, and is based on adult education principles. The content is aligned to policy and up to date with latest evidence-based practice. Using instructional design, it is tailored in a relevant and engaging way to strengthen the health system.

The KTU designs, develops and hosts various training offerings. It considers the client’s care pathway and how this pathway can be improved with available resources. The training incorporates data collection forms and registers where relevant, to strengthen the health system.

Customised online training solutions

The KTU hosts an online training platform with a customised database, built by the in-house team, that can accommodate different training needs from different settings like local governments, health departments or universities. Mentorship and support, as well as development of clinical training content, is part of what we offer to ensure that the requested training package is relevant to the target culture, context, health system and clinical priorities. The data collection parameters of the database cater to larger health system reporting requirements and to health system strengthening – this is unique and highly valuable.

KTU online school

The APC and PACK courses available on the KTU online school are our signature training. They consists of a range of short courses that employ a case-based approach in order to orientate the users to the guides and to build confidence for use in daily practice.

This training is suitable for undergraduate students, community service workers and healthcare workers.

PACK is integrated into various in-service competency-based training packages, such as NIMART, Basic Antenatal Care, Sexual and Reproductive Health and PreP.

This training is aimed at healthcare workers and healthcare support staff in the Western Cape Government: Health and Wellness.

The KTU manage and support the Brazil in-country team to design and develop PACK online courses for healthcare workers in Brazil. Courses are developed in Portuguese, focusing on local priority conditions.

Bachelor of Science Medicine (BSc Med)
This intervention focused on identifying cases of depression by nurses. Individual and group psycho-social counselling session were facilitated by lay-health workers.
Stepped care refers to the evidence-based system of delivering mental health care along a hierarchy of treatments and supports, allowing the individual to ‘step up’ or ‘step down’ to the appropriate level of care as their needs change.

Western Cape Birth-to-Two (B-2-2) Wheel - 2024

The B-2-2 wheel is a tool designed to be used alongside the PACK Child guide. It assists primary health care clinicians to plan a child’s routine care from birth to two years of age and streamline visits with the carer-child pair. It includes information on routine immunisations, development visits, growth monitoring, other routine screenings and First 1000 days messaging. It aligns with the Road to Health Booklet clinic visit schedule.

The B-2-2 wheel was developed in 2019 by the KTU in collaboration with various stakeholders and was adopted by the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness in 2023.  (in collaboration with the )

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) is medicine taken to prevent getting HIV. PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV when taken as prescribed.
Nurse Initiated Management of Anti-Retroviral Therapy (NIMART)
Adult education principles propose that:
  • Adults learn by doing
  • Adults learn well when they feel respected
  • Adults bring experience and knowledge into learning situations
  • The facilitator does not need to be the expert
  • Learning must be relevant and goal orientated
By looking at transmission frequency and timing within households, and how many contacts develop symptoms or not.
The STOPCOV intervention involved the allocation of a lay health worker providing support for 1 month of follow-up which included:
  • Household assessment
  • Package of surface cleaner
  • Gloves, masks
  • Regular calls and text messages

The Adult Primary Care (APC) clinical tool provides a comprehensive and practical approach to the primary care of adults in South Africa. It was designed for use during a consultation by primary health care clinicians. It covers over 500 symptoms, syndromes, diagnoses and chronic conditions, providing guidance around the management of communicable and non-communicable conditions, maternal and women’s health, mental health, musculoskeletal health, and palliative care. It was developed using approved clinical policies and guidelines issued by the South African National Department of Health and consolidates these into one integrated clinical decision-making support tool.

An online training package comprising simulated case scenarios accompanies this tool and is hosted on the Knowledge Hub. APC is being implemented as part of the Integrated Clinical Services Management (ICSM), a key focus within the Ideal Clinic Realisation and Maintenance (ICRM) initiative and is also complemented by the Health for All health promotion tool.

This guideline addresses the complexity of wound care management across all levels of care, includes guidance on preventing wounds in vulnerable patients and aims to standardise the management of chronic wounds in these groups.
